The Problem with Interactive Comics (Part 1)

For my capstone project proposal I’ve been reading a lot of interactive comics, and from reading them I’ve found that a lot of them I wouldn’t categorize as interactive comics. Or seem to have interactivity for the sake of it, rather then actually using it to support what they are trying to do in the comic.

Busy Busy (again)

Sorry for the lack of updates lately. I’ve been meaning to write more (namely about BioShick 2, and a few other things,) but with the quarter ending at school, sending out job applications, trying to finish my capstone project proposal, etc etc. I’ve been a bit busy and haven’t gotten around to doing as much blogging here as I had been hoping to.

At least expect more soon before the Game Developers Conference, and then probably about GDC. And hopefully I’ll have some good news/information about my capstone game project to talk about.

Introduction:
What follows is a short story I was writing based on this idea from a forum I visit on occasion. They posted some drawings, and said write something based on them. Seemed like a neat idea, and figured it would be good practice, so I started working on something. What follows is that, although it is incomplete. It sort of just ends, and I really haven’t gone over editing at all, but wanted to post it anyway.

It’s set in the world of “From 1 to Zombie Apocalypse,” which was a game idea I had (which I used for a couple of classes.) It was a setting I really liked, which I’d like to go back to at some point, so this short story let me sort of dip my toe back in that setting.

In Which I Talk About Mass Effect 1 & 2

I never finished Mass Effect 1, at least until the day Mass Effect 2 was released. I picked up ME1 on PC during Steam’s holiday sale intending to finish it so I would have a save to import into ME2. I played ME1 on 360 originally but never finished it, so the Steam sale provided a nice way to play the game over again, and get the save to import.

Quick iPad Impressions

I’ll keep this quick. I kind of don’t care about the Apple iPad. It looks neat, but I’m not about to pay $500 for one. Maybe if it were $250 I’d be more interested in the thing, but I guess I don’t really need a screen for my living room to use while watching TV. Granted I have an iPhone and a computer technically in my living room, but even if it wasn’t I still don’t think I’d want it.

I could see maybe getting on in the future as a laptop replacement, or something like that where I don’t need … Continue Reading

Bayonetta

I finished Bayonetta a few nights back, but I couldn’t really rationalize it until the day after I finished it. See I completely enjoyed the game while I was playing it, not just the fighting but every part of it, but I couldn’t figure out why.

My Graduate Capstone

Someone asked about this in a comment, so I figured it would be a good post for the blog. As part of my Masters program I’m in I have to complete a capstone, which can either be a thesis or a project. The difference being that a thesis is a paper, which you do a lot of research for, and for a project you make something (specifically they say a “deliverable.”) Continue Reading

The 7 Best Female Videogame Characters

Inspired by my friend Jess’s lists of the seven best and worst female cartoon characters, I decided to make similar lists but looking at female characters in videogames. I already posted my worst female videogame characters post, so you might want to read that first before continuing to read this post.

The 7 Worst Female Videogame Characters

Inspired by my friend Jess’s lists of the seven best and worst female cartoon characters, I decided to make similar lists but looking at female characters in videogames. My original intent while making the lists was to construct them much as she did, listing the character and then discussing why they are or aren’t a good female character.

Games of the Year 2009

Well its that time of year again, when everyone is putting out their lists of the best videogames of the year. I contemplated putting out just a list of my favorite games from the past year, in no particular order, but even so there was still one game for me that was just seemed to be better then all the others, in my mind. So I’m going to do both, honor my favorite game of the year as well as give a list of my best games of the year.
